First Grand Canyon Wolf in 70 Years Found Dead

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced that a gray wolf shot on December 28th in Utah was the same wolf that was spotted on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon last fall. The solo female wolf was the first to be spotted in the Grand Canyon in some 70 years. Once a common sight at the Grand Canyon, wolves were killed off by humans in the 1930s with the last sighting being 1939. Scientists and nature enthusiasts hoped this was a sign of the return of the wolf at Arizona’s natural wonder, but the wait will have to continue.
